In the fall of 2000, I worked as a collection agent for a MAJOR credit card company. Yes I was one of those people that would call you on Sunday morning, at 8:02 am and wake you up to inform you that your credit card payment was 63 days past due and you needed to pay up now or else!

As you can imagine my life was fun of joy and happiness, as I would be told by 30 clients an hour to go to _ or to get a real job!

I hated it!

Maybe not you personally, but many people in this country, at one time or another, have received such a call. Although being a collection agent is not all glitz and lights and fancy cars like you may think it is, it is a REAL job and those are REAL PEOPLE that you are talking to.

Now, the reason I tell you that story is to tell you this one…….

After my divorce I would get what felt like a million of these phone calls a day. It was paralyzing! I had always loved to get phone calls because that ment that I had a friend calling to talk or a client that wished to have an update or my assistance. Now it was a joy when my phone got shut off for none payment.

When I did get the money together to get my phone back on, I dreaded hearing the phone ring even more. Then I remembered something that n old friend had said to me that got me the job at the credit card company all those years ago….

“You get a lot more bees with honey then vinegar.”                                                                      

You see I sucked my first few months as a collect agent. I hated calling these low lives that would avoid their financial responsibilities and tell me that they couldn’t make their $30 past due payment because they didn’t have a job and didn’t have even the money to pay for electricity in their home. Problem was I have good ears and could hear “Wheel of Fortune” in the back round and I was talking to them on their cell phone because when I called the house phone they had it go to voicemail!

After my friend had told me this phrase she explained that if I ever wanted a promotion with the company that I would have to learn to be on the good side of people and get to know them.

“People want to know you care, and right now you are the bad guy. They can tell that all you want is their money for something they don’t remember buying.”

My friend coached me a little more on building a relastionship with my clients and the results where nothing short of AMAZING!

After recalling that lesson, I began to pick up my phone again. Where once I was mean and hateful to those people that were doing their job by calling me and attempting to collect, now I was being HONEST about where I was in life and doing what I could to make arrangements to pay for my financial responsibilities.

Two things happened:

1. I found that the people I was talking to on the other line didn’t yell or get belligerent if I didn’t, and
2. I began to have a different mindset of, “I can do this”.

My friends it has been over a decade since I received that lesson, and I am soo grateful I did.

Recently I have been spending time with a some very cool Multi-Millionaires.

Why?

Will because It is said that you’re the sum of the 5 people you hang around the most.

Now it’s not all about the money.

It’s not about the TV appearances…

It’s not about the hundreds of thousands of dollars that are given to charities around the world…

It’s about the Skill!

You see I have been a student of Great Skill most of my life. I believe it was by accident, but my parents seemed to at least want to be like the people that were better off then we were so I saw a lot of greatness as a child in the books in our house or the people my parents would study.

My children have had the same example.

But back to SKILL!

I have been taught that what we lack in Skill we must make up for in Time! How true this that!

We can look to Moses for a perfect example of this principle. Wasn’t he wondering in the dessert for 40 years? Or look at a baby learning to talk. It takes a few years before that skill really sets in. How about learning a new trade? Maybe you are a first time dad and have never changed a diaper before. It’s one thing to see it done and another to DO IT!

How does all of this apply to You? Well, consider this:

1. When was the last time you started something new?
2. When you decided to do that new thing, did you do it alone? If so, Why? (You think you’re a Bad A** don’t ya?)
3. If you didn’t get the results you wanted after the first or even second attempt, did you quit?

I have been spending time with some very cool Multi-Millionaires Lately!

Why?

Because I recognize that in order for me to be a FANTASTIC leader and resource to those that I am leading, I MUST improve my SKILL.

So again I ask you:

1. When was the last time you started something new?

If you are in a home business, maybe your something new would be to write out your list or resources (names of friends and family), or meet someone and have a conversation with that person about them such that you find a need that your business can fill for them. Maybe it’s picking up the darn phone and calling someone! You know what that something new would be for you! And because you know what that something new is, Do you have the skills to do the “thing” that you know you should be doing? For example: if you are calling prospects for your business do you know what to say that will get you a closing ratio of 90+%? If not, You are lacking SKILL!

2. When you decided to do that new thing, did you do it alone?

Now I know you’re not the person that is the Maverick and just goes out and does everything your own way so this will be just a review You are not the expert! If you are in a home business PLEASE use the talents of the person that introduced you to your business!

If you are having your team assist you, Are they teaching you why what they do is working? Do you know how to replicate that for your team members so you have a system that duplicates? If not, You are lacking SKILL!

Disclaimer: If you are one of the unfortunate few people out there that has “no help” from your team leaders, maybe it’s a sign that you get to find the leadership that will assist you in reaching your goals! Lets face it- if you have a burning desire to build this thing then you get to have a mentor, a coach, and one that knows what they are doing (for heaven sakes)! Stop wasting your time with team “leaders” that care more about their paycheck then about the goals and dreams of the “team”.

3.If you didn’t get the results you wanted after the first or even second attempt, did you quit?

I just have one thing to say here:

PUT ON YOUR BIG GIRL PANTIES AND HANDLE IT!

If you are going to learn to run, you must first walk, and before that comes the crawl. Failure isn’t Failure unless you give up.

You see for 10 plus years now I have been an entrepreneur. For the past 3 years I have been in the  home business arena. I have failed fantastically!

Oh how grateful I am for the lessons from my number one mentor, my God, on failing.

I have gone from squatting in an empty, for sale home that I didn’t own and losing all of my worldly posessions and a very unhappy marriage that I thought I wanted, to being blessed with a husband that treats me as a Queen with honoring, loving children and paying off  over $9,000 in debt in as little as 8 weeks!

I had to first learn to humble myself, stop being a Maverick, and to be taught by people who had been where I wanted to be. People with the skills I desired to have.

So how is it that I could have gone from no results to Paying off a HUGE amount of debt in such a short period of time while growing my business?
